A smartphone is an expensive investment. You want to take care of it, making sure it looks good and lasts as long as possible. These phones are being built tougher, so they can take rough handling -- but that doesn't mean you can bounce them around like a rubber ball.
Do New Smartphones Need Screen Protection?
Yes, they do. The screen is the most delicate part of the phone. Even with the best of care, it can get scratched or cracked. A screen protector is worth the money because it protects your phone against normal wear and tear, impact damage, and can provide some liquid damage protection, depending on the type you buy.
Protecting a new smartphone with a screen protector also preserves the value of the phone. If you ever want to sell or trade up for a new one, a scratched screen will decrease the value greatly. Chances are, you won't even be able to sell it all with a messed-up screen. With so many used phones on the market, nobody wants to buy a phone whose display is scratched.
Types of Smartphone Screen Savers
There are three main types of screen protectors: PET film, TPU, and Tempered Glass. What is the difference and which one is best?
- PET film: Obviously, "PET" doesn't refer to the furry critters you have around the house. In this case, it stands for "polyethylene terephthalate," which is a type of plastic. This type protects against scratches, but not impact.
- TPU: This type is one step up from the PET. TPU means thermoplastic polyreuthane. It is chemically-enhanced plastic that provides elasticity, scratch resistance, oil resistance, and an increase in toughness.
- Tempered Glass. This is the ultimate in screen protection. A tempered glass screen protector is multi-layered. The bottom layer is usually shock absorbent silicon, followed by a layer of PET film. An attractive clear adhesive secures the next two layers, tempered glass and an oleophobic coating, with the first two. All these layers of scratch, oil, and shock protection are compressed down to a sheet less than half a millimeter thick. It's just as easy to apply to your phone as the other types, without adding any extra weight or bulkiness.
Getting a screen protector for your smartphone is a no-brainer. The great thing is, you have many options and the benefits far outweigh the cost. PET film protectors are inexpensive and offer basic protection. A TPU protector is more difficult to find, but it offers good value for the price. For ultimate protection and durability, go with Tempered Glass. Although it's the priciest option, when it comes to protecting an expensive smartphone or tablet, it is well worth the money.
